Traveling DIY Tiny House for Solo Female Nomad

B.A. Norrgard quit her job and built a 112 square foot tiny house on wheels. She chose a Jay Shafer Four Lights Tiny House design. Today she travels all over the United States with her tiny abode, often giving tours!

B.A.’s tiny house is one of the smallest I’ve ever been in. As you walk in through the front door, you’re greeted by her kitchenette and bathroom. Farther in, the tiny home opens up, and you are standing inside of her spacious “great room” or living room area. Above her kitchen, is a bedroom loft.

B.A. kept her design minimal because she knew she’d be traveling with her tiny home. Today she hosts tiny home build workshops and is a powerful voice in the tiny house community. It was lovely to stumble upon her while we were traveling! It’s a small world (hehe).

Three whimsical, curved shaped, fantasy themed Tiny Homes

Abel Zyl, a master tiny house builder, found his passion for carpentry at a very young age. By the time Abel was in college, he was building his own self-designed boat!

Eventually, Abel repurposed the materials from his boat project and collected a variety of reclaimed items to build his very first tiny house . He lived in the “Azavela,” which means “Blue Wind,” for a short time with his young daughter. Not long after, he began building handcrafted tiny homes for other people.

“Zyl Vardos,” Abel’s tiny house company, has been in business for five years. During that time Abel and his crew have constructed over a dozen tiny homes, each thriving with character. His now famous designs are given whimsical names, such as: the Little Bird, the Ark, the Fortune Cookie, and the Dewdrop.

Over the years, Abel has developed an artistic trademark. Each of his homes feature a fairy-like curved roofed and almost all of them have a “Zyl Moon Window.” Abel builds with they help of several carpenters and a clever CNC router, located in his workshop on a farm in Olympia, Washington.

In this video, Abel takes us through his open air workshop. It’s wonderful to see the tiny house build process from a small business/family man perspective. Abel also takes us on a tour of three of his masterpieces, including his first tiny home, which holds a special place in his heart.

Derek’s Tumbleweed Tiny House in New Orleans

After Hurricane Katrine, Derek was forced to relocate into a FEMA trailer, like so many others in New Orleans. After living in the cheap RV, he knew his next tiny abode would be made from high quality materials and customized to fit his lifestyle. That’s why Derek chose to build and modify Tumbleweed Tiny House plans, just like we did!

He originally built his tiny house as a week day living space, so that he wouldn’t have to commute into the city from his suburban home. After living in it for awhile, Derek saved enough money and was able to purchase a large home in town for his growing family. His tiny home is now parked in the backyard and used as a guest house.

After building the “NOLA Tiny House” with his father, Derek says it holds a special place in his heart. He doesn’t think he’ll ever get rid of it, but perhaps it will evolve overtime as his family expands.

Gorgeous Vardo-style Tiny House in Tiny Home Community

Boasting a whopping 100.3 square feet, the Lucky Penny shines with character and originality. Currently Lina Menard, the owner and builder, lives in her tiny house in a tiny home community in Portland, Oregon. Be sure to check out our tour of the community, also on this channel! Check out the community tour here: https://youtu.be/X5Blm3-PqkE

Lina’s tiny house has copper accents and features a one story floor plan. She was inspired by vardos and wanted to build a simple space that felt large. Her skylight stretches the length of the house and lets in a lot of natural light. Lina uses the toilet and shower in the main house on the property while her tiny house is being finished.

French Tiny House Builder: Tour of La Tiny House Company

Bruno Thiéry built his first tiny home for a customer interested in “going green” with his family. During construction, Bruno was struck by the fact that tiny homes could help thousands of Europeans increase their standard of living. After that, he then started “La Tiny House” company. Today five families of carpenters join together to build tiny homes for europeans.

One challenge of building tiny homes in France is the weight limitations. In the USA, tiny homes have been known to weigh well over 10,000 pounds! In France, you are limited to 3.5 metric tons (or 7,700 lbs). The advantage is that these lightweight tiny homes can be moved with smaller vehicles.

So far La Tiny House company has built 15 tiny homes for French customers in the past two years. People in Europe are going tiny to reduce their expenses, spend more time outdoors, to reduce their impact on the environment and to live simpler lives.

Nicki Jo Davis, a firefighter and recent empty nester, decided to downsize from her enormous family home in Savannah, Georgia to a tiny home in 2014. Watch the video tour as Nicki takes us through her brand new tiny house , built by Tiny Green Cabins.

Nicki’s finished tiny home cost her just under $60,000 and features gingerbread trim, colorful siding, unique metal roofing, solar power, a combo washer/dryer and an incinerating toilet. Nicki also chose to have french doors on the side of her home as well as a front entrance way.

At the time of this tour, Nicki wasn’t sure where she was going to park her tiny home. The city of Thunderbolt, Georgia, (just outside of Savannah) has strict zoning laws. Still, Nicki was not dismayed and continued on her journey towards tiny living.

“The Nest” tree house designed by Will Beilharz of ArtisTree is located at Cypress Valley just outside of Austin, Texas. The Nest is an intricate tree house built on several levels and in multiple trees. It’s used as a vacation rental on the property.

Will has a passion for tree house design, and “The Nest” was one of his first creations. He wanted to build a Swiss Family Robinson-esk tree house, where families could call to each other from multiple levels. One awesome feature with The Nest tree house? You can actually take a zip line tour which ends at the tree house!

The Nest tree houses features two bedrooms and one bathroom. There are multiple staircases and swinging bridges. In the summer, the lush landscape and wildlife create an jungle-like backdrop! The Nest even features a butterfly hatchery and living roof! We think this has to be the COOLEST TREE HOUSE EVER!

Tiny House Family with Two Babies & a Great Dane!

Two and a half years ago Macy Miller moved into her self-designed and self-built 196 square foot tiny house in Boise, Idaho, with her partner, James, and a great dane puppy, Denver. But a lot has changed since then. . .

Over the past few years, their family has grown exponentially – and I’m not just talking about Denver gaining 140 pounds! Macy and James have welcomed daughter, Hazel, and their newborn son, Miles, into the tiny house , but not before adding on an additional living space. Originally the house had an attached covered patio, but they recently enclosed the space to create a shared bedroom for their children.

In this tour, Macy tells us about living in a tiny house with children and speaks about plans for the future. Hazel (18 months) gives us a tour of her new bedroom, which she will one day share with her brother.

At the time of filming this tour, Macy was nine months pregnant. Her son, Miles, was since born on October 1st, 2015. Today the “Mini Motives” tiny house is 232 square feet and accommodates two adults, two babies and a great dane!
